“The Mudguard and a Lonely Monkey” is an essay film of so-called artist, Wichanon Somumjarn. He went back to his hometown, Khon Kaen. This city was located in the northeastern of Thailand. With his new project “From the Muddy Banks of Chee River” a thriller-arthouse cinema on “nano budget”. He and his friends started an investigation on real problems and real locations. As reflective between this essay film and fiction film.
Director’s Statement :
Like an author who starting on the no plan book or a rock and roll musician who improvising on their own jazz music. It’s very simple thing. I had a film project from many projects didn’t finished. I just picked a very simple project to shoot. So It called “From the Muddy Banks of Chee River” a thriller-arthouse cinema on “nano budget”.
During development processed on script. Like every project I tried to find local investor or crowdfunded by “pre-order” method. But it’s very hard to got funded with unstable economy same as whole country.
My friends and I started researched and/or investigated with many video footages. What is the real values of this stuffs? At the beginning I just thought to put this documentary in the DVD of the feature. But to find the budget, I changed my mind to reconstructed them into an essay film. We try to made it valuables. For shooting a feature “From the Muddy Banks of Chee River” in the future.
จับคนมานั่งสัมภาษณ์หน้าฉากสีเทา ๆ, เอาข้อมูลยาก ๆ มาทำอินโฟกราฟิกให้คนดูง่าย ๆ, ใส่เสียงบรรยายอธิบายความตามภาพที่เห็น …ภาพจำของ “สารคดี” ของหลาย ๆ คนอาจเป็นเช่นนี้ แต่ความจริงแล้ว สารคดีมีความหลากหลายในวิธีการนำเสนอมากกว่านั้น

‘กากี’ เป็นนางในนิทานพื้นบ้านที่ถูกเปรียบกับกลิ่นหอมของดอกไม้และงามเลิศจนใครเห็นเป็นต้องหลงใหล กากีได้อาศัยอยู่กับ ‘หน้าทอง’ เจ้าอาณาจักร มีอำนาจเหนือทุกสิ่งและหลงรักการมองกากีดุจประติมากรรมอันงามเลิศ จนมาวันหนึ่ง ‘หนวดแดง’ คู่เล่นหมากประหลาดได้หลงรักกากีเข้า จนเกิดโศกนาฏกรรมในเรื่องนี้
สารคดีสุดตรึงใจ ติดตามชีวิตของผู้สูงวัยสองคนที่ดำเนินชีวิตบั้นปลายด้วยกันอย่างเงียบสงบในบ้านหลังเล็กซึ่งเต็มไปด้วยพืชผักนานาชนิดที่ถูกเพาะปลูกด้วยความรักและความเคารพต่อธรรมชาติ
ดัดแปลงจากเรื่องสั้นของ ฮารูกิ มูราคามิ …ความทรงจำ ความฝัน และจินตนาการของทุกคนล้วนได้รับอิทธิพลจากแผ่นดินไหว ก่อเกิดเป็นภาพประหลาดของต้นหลิวปีศาจ หนอนยักษ์ คำสาบาน กล่องลึกลับ และทางเดินอันมืดมิดไร้ที่สิ้นสุด ซึ่งอาจนำพาพวกเขาไปพบบางสิ่งในก้นบึ้งแห่งตัวตนของพวกเขาเอง
